The High Command of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) commended residents of Christiana in Manchester, for rushing to the assistance of a lawman who was chopped yesterday morning.
A corporal from the Christiana police station had to be rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery after he was chopped in the face by a man who is said to be of unsound mind.
The STAR was told that the policeman was attacked at about 9 a.m. while sitting in a police service vehicle while on traffic patrol duties in the town.
The Corporate Communications Unit confirmed the chopping incident.
The mentally ill man is in police custody.
Citizens in the area quickly assisted the injured officer. He was taken to hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.
A bystander was also shot and injured during the incident. He was taken to hospital and admitted in stable condition.
The Police High Command has launched an investigation into the matter.
