Jamaica’s Alicia ‘Slick’ Ashley failed in her bid to regain her World Boxing Council (WBC) super-bantamweight title last Saturday night, when she lost by unanimous decision to Denmark’s Dina Thorslund, at the Struer Energi Park.
The fight took place in Denmark, and two judges, Anssi Perajoki and Andreas Stenberg 96-94 and the third judge Ventsislav Nikolov 97-93, all gave the verdict to the 24-year old Dane.
The 10-round bout was a fast moving affair, with both boxers showing off their boxing skills. Thorslund was more aggressive, pressed her opponent throughout the fight and this impressed the three judges. Since losing the title to Fatima Zarika in 2016, Ashley had been waiting for a contracted return fight, but Zarika’s camp made numerous excuses to avoid the encounter.
Because Zarika was unable to fight at this time, the WBC gave the go-ahead for Ashley and Thorslund to fight for the title, with the proviso that the winner must fight Zarika next.
